My daughter has been doing competitive cheer leading since she was 4. She loves the sport and begs to go practice every day. When she first started cheering she liked it but over the years the love for the sport outweighs any other thing she loves to do. She has giving up so many birthday parties and hanging out with friends. For many years I did not offer her any private lessons. I only wanted to let her do them when I knew that she really wanted to. A few years went by before she started begging me to let her do it. So once she started do her tumble lessons it lit a fire in her and she started with a back handspring and throughout the years she mastered many tumbling skills. She now does a double full. I have heard many opinions about the sport of cheer leading. One that it is not a sport but she physically works out more than any other athlete I know. I get a lot of opinions on the outfits they wear but my most sincere response is that it a performance costume. I usually explain that she is not hanging out at the mall in her performance wear and if she were a swimmer she would have to wear a swimsuit. It seems that many people are quick to judge the name cheerleader. I ask you to click on the link I have on this page and watch her team. I am so proud for her this year she will be competing at the cheer leading world's competition at Disney World against cheer teams from all around the world. This has always been my daughter's dream to compete at Worlds. The day that they did the routine in the video was the day they received a full paid bid to go to Worlds. They competed against over 70 teams for that paid bid. It is so nice to see that all my daughter's hard work over the years accomplish a dream she has been dreaming of for years. I hope after watching their video it will show that competitive cheer leading is truly a sport.

WOW they are incredible! I have never been one of those that thought cheerleading wasn't a sport. After watching the video, I am even more impressed at what cheerleaders do and they should always be considered athletes.

Amazing. That is real athleticism. Cheerleaders have gotten a bad rap through movies and TV through the years as being airheads and stuck up. I don't believe this to be true.Cheerleaders are more then likely more fit then the "real" athletes they are cheering for.

Very nice!! My sister is also a cheerleader and she loves it. She's always coming home with a smile on her face after a competition she had, which I love seeing her happy about. Congratulations to your daughter on all of her hard work.

Your daughter's team is incredibly impressive! I can't imagine being that athletic or coordinated with so many people. I started laughing when I read your post because I don't know why anyone would feel cheerleaders weren't athletic. All of the cheerleaders that I've ever known were very serious about their sport and were a far cry from the stereotypical image.
ReplyDeleteYou must very, very proud of your daughter!
I would have never considered cheer leading a sport but I do see the girls put in a lot of work and discipline into their cheers. Something similar to cheerleading would be Steppers. And stepping is not considered a sport. It is an extra curricular activity for students to participate in to give them a sense of sportsmanship and team work amongst other things. You can't make a living cheerleading or stepping. I personally encourage students to participate in something they can be proud of and put their all into to allow them to see what hard work and dedication would get you.

Great video! They did amazing in their performance. The cheerleaders on my old high school didn't have anywhere near that much talent and determination. It is sad that movies and shows have out a certain image of cheerleaders because obviously it isn't an accurate image. I totally agree that cheerleading is a sport because there is no doubt that they work and compete just as hard as any athlete as well as have the potential to get seriously hurt. I applaud you and your daughter hard work and congratulations to you both!
