Social Media?? By: Eboni Johnson

Where would we be without social media? I mean social media is definitely something some people take extremely serious. Social Media is a way of life for others, but if you think about it about ten years ago we had no knowledge of social media and we had no thought of how much of a big impact it would be on our lives today. On a good note social media is does have its good points. I mean without social media, how you would be able to reconnect with old classmates, family members, co-workers… etc. Social Media such as Facebook and twitter even have to where you could place yourself in a certain group and this way it will allow you to be connected with people you have a lot in common with. This will allow you to blog about things that interest you the negative sides to social media in my opinion are it can make you look bad. Now when applying for certain positions with companies they review your information on social media sites to get more information who they are about to hire. I understand that we may have a life outside of work or school bit if the wrong person gets hold of your account it could have a negative effect. Last, there has been a lot of social media bullying that has affected a lot of innocent people. It has even taken the life’s of some, I feel this is what happens when you use social media negatively and there is no way around it, because its people voicing their opinions. So how do you feel about social media, do you think it’s for better or worse?

  1. I think that when it is used correctly, social media is a good thing, however it does have its drawbacks. I have actually stopped checking my facebook as much because I do think people become addicted to it and at times, take over their lives.

  2. I agree with Linnzi about people becoming addicted to it. Whenever I talk to my nieces, nephews and some of my friends they will talk to me about things I do not know about and then they say, "Didn't you see it on Facebook?" When I say that I haven't checked my Facebook in a while, I can see the confusion on their faces. It is almost like Facebook is where the real world is for them sometimes.

  3. Social media is a double edged sword. On the one edge its a way to get in touch with people but as you pointed out it can be used in negative ways. I do believe that businesses should keep out of your personal life but anything on the internet becomes public domain.

Social Media has become more then just a way to keep in touch. With games added into the mix it has become an obsession. I have heard people talk about there "farms" on Farmville as if they were actually growing actual crops. That's insanity pure and simple.

  4. Social media can be a good thing and also a bad thing. I tend to get on Facebook a lot and talk to all of my friends which I love to do. The bad thing about Social Media is that people start a lot of bad things on them, talking bad about people, or even harassing people. It is a great place to communicate with family and friends, only if you do it the right way in my opinion.

  5. I definitely have mixed feelings about Social Media. It was really nice to be able to stay in contact with my fiancé while we were apart, but I think that communicating digitally put somewhat of a strain on our relationship. You can use emoticons and different ways to express yourself online, but it's very easy to misinterpret someone's tone through an IM, post, or text.

This is a very relevant post to every day life. I was just thinking about this topic a few hours ago. I have all these pictures I took that I can share with my finacé's family (because they are on Facebook), but my parents aren't on any social network at all. I'm going to have to upload my pictures onto their computer for them.

  6. I don't know what I would do without my Facebook! I remember back in early high school when MySpace was a hit and what a mess that turned into. I feel that social networks can be very beneficial to us as long as everyone uses them properly. Which I know we can't count on. But one thing I probably would try and do is put age groups on them. Like leaving MySpace for middle or high schoolers, and FaceBook for college students since that is who it was created for, and maybe make twitter for everyone else.

  7. I also have mixed feelings about the social media. The way it has advanced over just these last several years is kind of scary. I remember as a child we didn't really have any of these and now my younger brother and sister Facebook just about every day. Honestly, the main thing I have seen these social media’s cause is problems, problems, and more problems. My siblings have gone through so many behavioral issues with other kids because of these websites and it is just too much. I will admit, I do have a Facebook account. However, I get on it maybe once a month at the most just to check in on family members and friends I don't see much. I am grateful the social media gives me that advantage and pleasure. So I am with Katherine and say I have mixed feelings about the social media.
